Decision making frameworks

Decision-making processes for spatial planning need to reflect the purpose and objectives of the particular initiative. Most spatial planning and marine planning processes adopt the concept of sustainable development as a core principle. The decision-making processes for developing and choosing plan policies therefore need to ensure that  environmental, economic and social factors are considered in a holistic and integrated manner.

There is a vast literature on planning and environmental decision-making frameworks ranging from relatively simple through to highly complex. Experiences with decision-making from terrestrial spatial planning provide some particularly valuable learning points for the implementation of marine planning.
